Kyana Kingbird

Indigenous Dance Choreographer 

Kyana Kingbird is a Mi’kmaq and Ojibwe fancy shawl and jingle dress dancer,from Esgenoôpetitj (Burnt Church) First Nation. Her dance forms include thefancy shawl and jingle dress, which not only serve as textile wearable art butalso as captivating performances.

Growing up, it was Kyana’s Grandfather who made it a tradition to attendPowwows regularly, especially during the summer. During this time, her auntplayed a significant role in introducing her to the world of dance by creatingone of her first regalia, the fancy shawl. As a passionate dancer, Kyanaparticipates in both traditional and competitive Pow-Wows, showcasing herskills and bringing joy to the audience.

In 2022, Kyana’s talent and dedication were recognized when she wasselected to be a part of the NBA team’s Welcome Toronto creators program.This prestigious opportunity highlights her creativity and showcases her as aremarkable artist.
