Natalie Sappier
Indigenous Dance Dramaturg
Natalie Sappier, known by her Indigenous name Samaqani Cocahq, is a visionary artist whose profound journey in storytelling, spoken word, dance, and movement has been a testament to her commitment to preserving and sharing the rich heritage of her Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) culture.
Sappier’s transformative artistic expedition began during her tenure as the artist in residence at Theatre New Brunswick in 2016, under the guidance and mentorship of Thomas Morgan Jones. It was within this nurturing environment that she embarked on the path of unraveling and awakening her voice and movement, ultimately birthing the acclaimed production, “Finding Wolastoq Voice.”
This groundbreaking creation not only marked a pivotal moment in her artistic career but also served as a catalyst for a new storytelling process-one that unearthed dormant teachings, a profound sense of purpose, and unbridled joy. Through this journey, every aspect of Sappier’s being came alive, an experience that was both exquisitely beautiful and daunting, yet comforted by the wisdom of her Traditional Medicines, Teachings, and Family.
For Sappier, the realization dawned that stories are akin to medicine, embodying the essence of Indigenous existence and wisdom. Her roots run deep, intertwined with the flow of her ancestral river, guiding and influencing every step she takes. With each story she shares, she aspires to kindle the flames of self-sacredness, foster profound understanding, and nurture a lasting sense of peace.
In her quest to inspire and uplift through the healing power of storytelling, Natalie Sappier, as Samaqani Cocahq, stands as a beacon of cultural resilience and reverence, passionately embracing her ancestral heritage and offering narratives that resonate with universal truths, weaving a tapestry of connection and harmony.
