Igor Dobrovolskiy

I want the audience to come away with something personal – to see the beauty of the work, the dancers and the aesthetic – but also experience a personal exploration, so that they recognize themselves in the dance – their own relationships and narratives. These are the touch points of accessibility, connectivity and of understanding each other as a community.

Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada Igor Dobrovolskiy immigrated to Canada with his wife Yuliia in 2000. He is an award winning director and one of Canada’s most prolific choreographers—having created eleven full length ballets, one one-act ballet and 48 short works to date for Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada. Igor Dobrovolskiy’s creative work catapulted Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada, on to the international stage. Beginning in 2006 Dobrovolskiy’s works created for the company have toured regularly through-out Europe- Belgium, Switzerland, France and Germany and the United States.

Igor Dobrovolskiy’s works weave dramatic narrative with inventive choreography to create powerful, emotional and lyrical forms which explore the human condition. Drawing on an extensive musical and literary background, as well as his experience as a dancer, teacher and choreographer, Mr. Dobrovolskiy uses the solid foundation of classical ballet technique as a springboard for an expressive dance lexicon limited only by his boundless imagination.

Igor Dobrovolskiy holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in pedagogy of ballet, dance and choreography from the Kiev National University of the Arts. His professional career has taken him across Europe, and South America. Collaborating with like-minded artists attracted by his vision and his artistic philosophy, Mr. Dobrovolskiy has created a work environment which has become a focus for exploration and discovery. His creative team, many of whom have worked with him for several years, nurture connections between seemingly unrelated elements to create organic works which blend all creative components.

Mr. Dobrovolskiy’s creations present an integrated structure influenced by literature, film, theatre, the visual arts and new media. Set, costume, lighting, music and choreography are all intrinsic to the work. Set pieces and props are not merely decorative components but become developed elements which are integrated in collaboration with a full creative team for each production.

He has built a company of high artistic standard and international appeal which has resulted in a loyal and growing audience nationally and globally.

PIAF

Abandoned by her mother at birth, raised by her grandmother in a brothel, encouraged to sing by her Father- a street acrobatic Edith Piaf became one of France’s most legendary singers of all times. Artistic Director, Igor Dobrovolskiy and the exceptional dancers of Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada explore a life shrouded in mystery, love and tragedy reflected in the authentic and life inspired songs of the great Edith Piaf.

… a tribute to the power of dance as a vehicle for storytelling. You smile, you cry, you dream…

Leadership and the Arts: Inspiring Creativity

Our workshops utilize artistic perspectives and skills exploring leadership abilities through structured experiences that inspire creativity and allow participants to connect and mentally shift perspective.

The 21st first century confronts us with unprecedented challenges. These times call for exceptional leadership at a global, national, organizational, and community level and a new set of skills. Research conducted by the Conference Board and the IBM Global CEO study indicates that the number one leadership need in today’s world is creativity.

Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada is committed to using our creative practices to help organizations and communities look differently at their issues and challenges (and the solutions that can be possible).

You can never solve a problem on the level at which it was created…You must learn to see the world anew.

HOMEbody

The HOMEbody Symposium 2015 is a public engagement initiative of Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada organized. The symposium focused on shaping the future of New Brunswick by bringing together over 246 participants, representing a cross-section of community builders, post-secondary students from across the province and newcomers to New Brunswick.

The HOMEbody Symposium was in partnership with artist-in-residence and creator of the HOMEbody performance Shannon Litzenberger whose artistic work inspired the event, as well as Artslink NB.

The packed full bilingual symposium included hearing the stories of twenty-two “Changemakers”, including emerging businesses, place makers, newcomers and social ventures that are “making it” in New Brunswick. Their stories helped shape the conversation on what can be achieved in New Brunswick. The day’s dialogue culminated in challenging participants to “ Create their Story” of why New Brunswick is a great place to live, work, innovate and create by identifying assets, key opportunities and possible projects and narratives on how to build the province’s future.

The symposium included presentations from by John Bragg, Chairman & Co-CEO Oxford Frozen Foods Ltd. President; Owner and Founder of Eastlink; Richard Saillant, Director of the Canadian Institute for Research on Public Policy and Public Administration; award winning Canadian author, Noah Richler and dancer choreographer Shannon Litzenberger.
